Announcement of China's patent document authorization data from January to April 2024

Recently, the National Intellectual Property Administration released the monthly report on examination and registration in April 2024. Compared with January-April 2023, the number of invention patents increased by 43.42 % year-on-year, the number of utility models decreased by 20.72% year-on-year, and the number of designs decreased by 14.25% year-on-year.

1. Patent

From January to April 2024, my country authorized 362,000 invention patents, 601,000 utility model patents, and 211,000 design patents.

As of the end of April 2024, the number of valid invention patents in my country is 5.274 million. Among them, the number of valid invention patents in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) is 4.287 million. The number of valid utility model patents is 12.256 million. The number of valid design patents is 3.289 million.

From January to April, our office accepted 21,100 PCT international patent applications, of which 19,200 were submitted by domestic applicants.

From January to April, Chinese applicants submitted a total of 676 international design applications①. From January to April, a total of 700 published international design applications designated China.

2. Trademark

From January to April, my country's trademark applications totaled 2.223 million, and trademark registrations totaled 1.724 million. As of April 2024, there were 47.507 million valid registered trademarks.

From January to April, our office received 2,293 Madrid trademark international registration applications from Chinese applicants.

III. Geographical Indications and Integrated Circuit Layout Designs

From January to April, our bureau approved 2 applications for geographical indication product protection, approved 84 registrations of geographical indications as collective trademarks and certification trademarks, and approved 758 business entities using geographical indication special marks. As of April 2024, a total of 2,510 geographical indication products have been approved, 7,361 registrations of geographical indications as collective trademarks and certification trademarks have been approved, and 26,406 business entities have been approved to use geographical indication special marks.

From January to April, my country received 3,503 applications for integrated circuit layout-design registration and issued 4,189 certificates.
